Forget the hotel restaurants. The best meal you will eat in Bulawayo this month is probably in a backyard in Cowdray Park or Pelandaba.
A small but growing scene of backyard supper clubs has emerged in Bulawayo’s high-density suburbs over the last two years. Hosts cook elaborate set menus — usually for ten to sixteen guests — drawing on traditional Ndebele dishes, regional Southern African flavours and inventive twists on township staples.
“My ozigodho with peanut butter glaze is on the menu next Friday,” said Sis Nomsa Mhlanga, whose Pelandaba supper club has a four-month waiting list. “You will eat at 6pm. You will leave at 11pm. You will know your dinner companions by the end.”
Most of the clubs operate by WhatsApp invitation. Prices are reasonable, food is exceptional, and bookings move fast.
